30 June 2010– Xcel Energy is now operating a hybrid solar-coal power plant at its Cameo Generating Station in Colorado. The plant uses parabolic trough solar technology integrated with a coal-fired power plant.

The plant is designed to increase plant efficiency, decrease the use of coal, test the commercial viability of concentrating solar power thermal integration and lower carbon dioxide emissions. Abengoa Solar developed the parabolic trough technology, which concentrates solar energy to provide heat for producing supplemental steam for electric power production.

The project is one of the first under Xcel’s Innovation Clean Technology Program, an initiative to test new technologies with potential to lower greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and make other environmental improvements. The program also tests the technologies and evaluates costs, reliability and environmental performance at a demonstration scale before determining whether they can be scaled up.
