Moroccan coal plant in $1.4bn expansion

Financing worth $1.4bn has been put in place to almost triple the capacity of the 700 MW Jorf Lasfar coal fired power plant in Morocco.

Jorf Lasfar Energy, a subsidiary of Abu Dhabi National Energy Company, wants to expand units five and six at the site, which will boost the plant’s overall capacity to 2056 MW.

Banks involved in the project include BNP Paribas, Société Générale, Standard Chartered and Morocco’s Banque Centrale Populaire.

The expansion work is expected to begin at the end of 2013.
