The Zambian regulator has approved an electricity transmission line from the $650m Maamba coal power generation station to Muzumba sub-station.
Zambia’s Energy Regulation Board (ERB) granted a regulatory consent for Maamba Collieries and Zesco to sign a 265.5 MW power purchase agreement (PPA), with Zesco agreeing to buy the electricity produced for a period of 20 years.
China-based SEPCO Electric Power Construction will build the transmission line simultaneously with the 300 MW Coal Fired Power Plant on engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) basis, according to Energy Business Review.
The first unit is scheduled to be completed by October 2014, the second unit by January 2015 and is set to be the first coal powered thermal power plant in Zambia.
