FNME, the French energy and mining union has quit talks with E.ON (FWB: EOAN) France over its plans to close 1 GW of coal-fired power plants until further clarity is given on the newly appointed dispute mediator.

The power and gas sector faces stiff opposition to any closures of power plants as FNME will oppose any job cuts in power and gas companies, maintaining that France must retain its fossil fuel-fired fleet, it said in a statement.

This followed the appointment by French public authorities of a mediator to broker talks between the company and its employees, over the planned closure of four ageing coal plants at various dates from 2013.
