The UK arm of German utility RWE announced the opening of the company’s $1.6bn gas power generation plant at Pembroke, Wales on Wednesday.

The RWE npower-owned power station in Pembroke is set to produce enough energy for around three and a half million homes as well as create around 100 jobs in the area.

The unveiling comes in the same week that RWE npower announced the closure of the 2000 MW coal fired power station at Didcot, and 1000 MW Fawley oil fired power station in England.

The opening of the gas powered plant has been overshadowed by a European Commission investigation into how the permissions for the plant were granted and whether it damages the marine environment

RWE npower described the facility as one of Europe’s largest and most efficient combined cycle gas turbine plants, adding that it would provide a highly flexible and reliable source of energy.
