RWE (FWB: RWE) has captured the first tonne of carbon in a pilot project in the UK, aimed at reducing carbon dioxide emissions from power generating stations.
The project at the Aberthaw coal power plant in Wales is expected to test retrieving carbon emitted by 3MW of generation capacity over the next two years.
In addition, the pilot project will indicate whether carbon capture technology could be expanded to a full-scale power generating station.
Shell-owned Cansolv Technologies has developed the technology being used at the Aberthaw plant, and it can capture around 50 tons of carbon each day.
