Providing around 4 per cent of Britain’s total electricity supply, 2000 MW Eggborough – which was commissioned in 1967 and is in Yorkshire, England – is one of the biggest coal plants in the country.

It has recently announced plans for a £500m conversion to run on biomass.

Neil O’Hara, chief executive of Eggborough Power, said of reaching one million running hours: “This landmark has been reached as we embark on a new, sustainable future for Eggborough. Our biomass conversion project plans to transform ageing infrastructure into a major renewable energy power house, extending the life of the facility, securing hundreds of existing jobs onsite and creating thousands more across the region.”
