The Vojany power station in eastern Slovakia is set for modernisation after the country’s economy ministry announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding withr US energy firm Theta Energy.
The deal enables potential investment of between $600-800m to modernise the coal-fired power plant.
The 220 MW Slovenske Elektrarne owned plant could see investment in not just the modernisation of the plant but also the creation of a technology park to develop and produce innovative technologies.
A deal could add 800 jobs, the ministry said, in a region where up to 20 percent are unemployed, twice the national average.
