Lucky Cement, the largest cement producer in Pakistan, is shifting from coal to tyre-derived fuel (TDF) at its cogeneration power facilities.

It is installing an $11m TDF plant at its Karachi facility. Although no date has been given, the company said that commissioning of the TDF plant is “in its final stages”.

In addition to using TDF, Lucky Cement said that it is also considering using other alternative fuels, including municipal solid waste and rice husk, known as refuse-derived fuel (RDF).

Lucky Cement said that installation and commissioning TDF and RDF plants will reduce its operational costs by 25-30 per cent. In the case of cement kiln applications, the ash resulting from combustion becomes an integral component of the product, thereby eliminating the problem of ash disposal.
