Russian company Inter RAO UES has expressed interest in investing in small hydro and coal power generation projects, in developing transmission lines, and in developing and running low-BTU gas power plants in Pakistan.

A delegation from the company met Syed Naveed Qamar, Pakistan’s minister for water and power, on 20 July to discuss investment opportunities. The company said that it will identify specific projects for investment. Pakistan has large coal reserves while Inter RAO has expertise in developing coal-fired power generation, said Naveed Qamar.

Pakistan’s government will facilitate investors in every respect, said the minister. Special incentives are being planned to attract foreign investors and upfront tariffs based on various technologies and fuel will be announced soon to facilitate investment, he added.
