Industrial strikes cut French energy capacity by 3.7 GW

Unplanned outages were responsible for lack of availability of five power plant facilities in France on Thursday.

Outages at EDF’s Penly 1, Belleville 1, Dampierre 1 and Tricastin 3 and 4 nuclear reactors, together with an outage at E.ON’s Provence 5 coal plant, cut availability by a combined 3.7 GW.

France‘s largest unions including Confederation Generale du Travail and Force Ouvriere, which represent the energy industry among other sectors, called for a national strike day against austerity measures on Thursday.
