The Russian-designed Tianwan nuclear power plant has seen construction of its number 3 unit commence in China.

The plant in the country’s Jiangsu province had its first concrete poured on 27 December, reports Nuclear Engineering International.

Atomstroyexport JSC will construct both units 3 and 4 of the VVER-1000 reactor plants, each consisting of 1060 MW electric capacity. Jiangsu Nuclear Power Corporation (JNPC) will design and deliver the balance-of-plant equipment.

The first unit is expected to start up in 2018, according to Rosatom. Tianwan already possess two other units.
