Teck began mining the Aqqaluk deposit at Red Dog in 2010. It is one of the world’s largest zinc mines and is expected to provide sufficient ore to enable operations to continue until 2031.
The power plant has eight Wärtsilä generator sets with a combined output of 42 MW and under the new deal with Wärtsilä the power plant lifetime and performance are set to be optimised.
A range of services offered to Red Dog includes technical support services, fuel efficiency initiatives, training services, electrical and automation audits as well as spare parts and maintenance work for major overhauls.
‘By working closer together with Red Dog’s team, we believe that together we can enhance the operations of their power generation,’ says Tomas Rönn, vice president, Services, Americas from Wärtsilä.
