Siemens to deliver rotor for Saudi gas power plant

Siemens has produced what it claims is the world’s largest geared compressor rotor for use in a combined-cycle power plant in Saudi Arabia.

The firm announced this week that it had manufactured and tested the rotor, which features a first-stage impeller with a diameter of 1.8 metres, at its facility in Duisburg, Germany.

The rotor weighs more than seven tonnes, Siemens said, adding that the impeller was balanced in Duisburg at a speed of 3970 revolutions per minute. At its average operating speed, the outside diameter of the first-stage impeller rotates at a speed of 1350 km/h.

The rotor is destined for Saudi Aramco’s 4 GW Jazan combined-cycle plant, part of an integrated refinery and terminal complex under construction on the Red Sea coast. à‚

The plant, which will be fuelled with gasified refinery residues, is planned to supply power to the industrial area of Jazan city as well as process steam for the gas complex.à‚
