Siemens has started testing the 60 Hz version of its SGT-8000H, which recently achieved more than 60 per cent efficiency in its 50 Hz version at the Irsching 4 combined cycle power plant.
One of six 60 Hz ‘H Class’ gas turbines intended for Florida Power & Light in the US is now being checked at Siemens’ gas turbine manufacturing plant, where the test bed has been expanded for this purpose and a new drilling station for casing parts installed at a cost of €30m ($43m).
During a test run as part of commissioning the Irsching 4 CCPP, Siemens achieved an output of 578 MW with an efficiency of 60.75 per cent.
Siemens sees its flexible H Class gas turbines as well suited to balancing the rising contribution of intermittent renewable forms of generation to the power supply.
