The combined-cycle Liberty plant will be fired entirely by the Marcellus shale gas reserves and will have a capacity of 829 MW.
Due to be commissioned in 2016, the plant will consist of two units as single-shaft configurations, each with one of Siemens’ H-class gas turbines (pictured) as the main component.
Siemens will supply two power islands, each consisting of one SGT6-8000H gas turbine, one SST6-5000 steam turbine, one hydrogen-cooled SGen-2000H generator and one heat recovery steam generator, along with the overall electrical system and the SPPA-T3000 I&C system. The gas turbines and generators will be built at Siemens’ plant in Charlotte, North Carolina.
The company claims that “thanks to the H-class technology, this plant will be one of the most modern gas-fired plants on the east coast of the US”.
Siemens has sold 24 of the H-class gas turbines worldwide, with almost half going to the US. “This demonstrates how truly dynamic the market for gas-fired power plants is,” said Roland Fischer, chief executive of Siemens’ fossil power generation division.
