Siemens (NYSE:SI) has received a new order for three of its high-efficiency SGT6-8000H gas turbine and generator packages from Florida Power & Light (FPL), as part of a modernisation programme at the Port Everglades facility.

The modernised combined-cycle power plant is expected to enter operation in 2016.

According to Siemens, with orders already received for FPL’s Cape Canaveral and Riviera Beach power stations, it has now sold nine of its innovative H-class gas turbines in the US.

Worldwide the total number of H-class turbines sold has now risen to 20.

The first H-class gas turbine was successfully started on 21 November at FPL’s Cape Canaveral facility in Port St. John, Florida, near NASA’s Kennedy Space Center.

The SGT6-8000H is the scaled 60 Hz version of the SGT5-8000H gas turbine, which made power plant history in May 2011 when it achieved an efficiency of 60.75 per cent

The SGT6-8000H is designed to 274 MW output of electric power, and is also capable of reaching efficiencies topping 60 per cent in combined-cycle operation.
