Rolls-Royce wins Portuguese power contract

LONDON, Oct. 3, 2000à‚–Rolls-Royce has won a 6.2 million pounds sterling contract to supply an RB211 gas turbine for a cogeneration project in Portugal. Rolls-Royce will provide the equipment to Abener Energia S.A. of Seville, Spain for a complex at Carrico north of the Portuguese capital Lisbon.

The contract is the latest success in southern Europe for Rolls-Royce following a 4.8 million pound contract announced in March to supply an RB211 power generation set for use at Abener’s ethanol production plant at Curtis in Galicia, northwest Spain.

Under the new contract, the RB211 Dry Low Emissions gas turbine will produce electricity and heat. The electricity will be sold to the national grid with the exhaust heat from the turbine being used as part of the process to extract salt from a solution taken from a gas storage cavern.

The cogeneration station will be built by GDP Energia and EDP Cogeracao, the Portuguese gas and electricity supply companies. Abener Energia is GDP/EDP’s main contractor on the site.

Elsewhere in Spain, Rolls-Royce industrial power generation equipment is already used at the Ertisa petrochemical plant at Huelva south of Seville. The plant is powered by a Rolls-Royce RB211 gas turbine producing electricity and steam for Spanish group CEPSA.
