MALAYSIA, Oct. 20, 2000 (Business Times) Construction of the third block of the Lumut Power Plant in Pantai Remis commenced yesterday following the ground-breaking ceremony by MenteriBesar Datuk Seri Tajol Rosli Ghazali.

The additional block, which will operate a 430 megawatt open cycle gas turbine, will comprise three units of gas turbines, each capable of delivering 143 MW, and a heat recovery system boiler.

Malakoff Berhad managing director Ahmad Jauhari Yahya said the third block, costing an estimated RM1.

5 billion, is expected to generate an additional 650 MW to the plant’s existing capacity of 1,303 MW.

Upon completion Lumut Power Plant, the country’s largest power producer, is expected to produce a total of 1,953 MW.

“The first gas turbine is expected to be operational by December next year, the second one and third turbines in stages until they reach the maximum capacity of 650 MW by the year 2003,” he said in his speech at the ceremony.

Malakoff, the plant’s major equity holder, received the approval from the Economic Planning Unit (EPU) in the Prime Minister’s Department to develop and operate the additional block in July this year.

Later, at a Press conference, Tajol Rosli said the State Government fully supported the project considering the various benefits to be reaped from it.

This included providing job opportunities to the local people.
