Electricity generator International Power, today announced that it had completed the acquisition of the Rugeley coal-fired power station from US-owned TXU Europe. The deal adds a further 1000 MW generating capacity to the 9900 MW currently operated by International Power.
Peter Giller, International Power CEO said, ” We are delighted with the prompt closure of this deal following its announcement on June 11th”. “The combination of Rugeley and our 500 MW Deeside CCGT gives us a total if 1500 MW of installed capacity in the UK, and improves our fuel diversification,” said Giller.
The Rugeley plant, located 25 miles north of Birmingham, was commissioned in 1970 and comprises two 498 MW CA Parsons steam turbines and two Foster Wheeler/ John Brown boilers. The plant also includes two 25 MW Rolls Royce Avon open cycle gas turbines used primarily for black start capability and ancillary services.
