GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy signed an agreement with Lockheed Martin to design and build digital control systems and nuclear reactors.
Under the agreement, Lockheed Martinâs nuclear systems and solutions division will design and manufacture the main reactor control room systems for GEHâs Economic Simplified Boiling Water Reactors (ESBWR). Lockheed Martin also will provide GEH with related simulation and training support, as well as services and replacement equipment.
The ESBWR is expected to receive a final design rule making from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission by Fall 2011. Last October the design was recommended for approval by the Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards with no open items.
GEH and DTE Energy are collaborating on an ESBWR project adjacent to the existing Fermi 2 nuclear plant near Detroit. The NRC is currently reviewing the utilityâs license application for the proposed âFermi Unit 3â project, which serves as the Reference Combined Operation License for the design.
The majority of Lockheed Martinâs design and production work will be performed at its design engineering and manufacturing facilities in Archbald, Pa., and Dallas. Simulation and training support will be provided in Orlando, Fla.
