First phase of London offshore wind project finished

The first phase of the London Array wind farm on the Thames has been completed.

Dong Energy and E.ON (FWB:à‚ EOAN) are part of the consortium that confirmed first phase completion with the installation of the 175th turbine on the Thames Estuary in the UK.

When completed it will be one of the largest offshore wind farms in the world, and is scheduled to be fully operational by mid-2013, producing enough electricity to power at half a million homes.

The second phase featuring another 166 turbines is yet to be approved and once complete, the entire wind farm will occupy an area of 245kmà‚² generating a combined capacity of 870 MW.

E.ON UK chief executive officer Tony Cocker added, “I look forward to seeing London Array’s contribution to the UK’s low carbon energy mix for many years to come.”
