Cogeneration replaces coal in Beijing power project

A Chinese utility has placed an order for two gas turbines to fuel a new combined-cycle cogeneration plant.

State-owned Huaneng Power International placed the country’s first order for M701F5 gas turbines from Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems (MHPS), the company announced this week.

The new plant represents the third phase of development for the utility’s Beijing Huaneng thermal power plant project. In accordance with Beijing’s pollution reduction plan, which aims to cut 13 million tonnes of coal consumption by 2017, the new plant is planned to replace an existing coal-fired plant (pictured) which was built during phase 1.

The 1100 MWe cogeneration plant will provide power and heat to Beijing’s metropolitan area. In winter, the plant is planned to supply up to 750 MWth of heat.
