Telangana was formed last year when the state of Andhra Pradesh was formally split in two. It has a population of 35 million and comprises 10 former districts of Andhra Pradesh, including the city of Hyderabad.
The new 800 MW plant will be in Kothagudem and has been ordered by the Telangana State Power Generation Corporation Limited (TSGENCO).
It will also be built on a fast-track basis and is expected to be completed in 36 months.
Previously, BHEL has commissioned 84 per cent of the coal plants in Andhra Pradesh, including Ramagundam, Vijayawada, Kothagudem and Rayalaseema.
TSGENCO has signed a memorandum of understanding with BHEL for the construction of new thermal plants totalling 6000 MW in the state in the next three years to meet Telangana’s increasing demand for power.
