Italy’s Ansaldo Energia has been awarded a EUR300m contract from Societe Algerienne de Production de l’Electricite (SPE SpA) to supply equipment to the Algerian Hassi Messaoud (Wilya d’Ouargla) open cycle natural gas-fired power plant.

The Hassi Messaoud plant, which has a total rated output of more than 660 MW, comprises three generating sets with three AE 94.3A gas turbines and alternators, all manufactured at Ansaldo Energia’s Genoa facilities.

SPE is part of the Sonelgaz Group and was founded in January 2004. Its fleet is based on thermal and hydro and has an installed capacity of 6740 MW.

The contract was awarded following a national and international tender process.

Ansaldo Energia has been working in Algeria since the 1970s, when it built a 75 MW multi-fuel power plant at Annaba for Sonelgaz.

Thus, the latest project, which brings the total output capacity built by Ansaldo Energia for Sonelgaz to more than 4000MW, further strengthens the cooperation with one of the main development partners in Algeria’s strategic electric power production plan.
