French multinational Alstom (Euronext: ALO) has won a contract from GDF Suez Energy North America to upgrade and maintain four natural gas-fired power plants in the US.

As part of the $480m deal, Alstom will upgrade the turbines with features that will enable GDF to switch between operating modes based on electricity demand without taking the plant offline.

The first phase of the upgrade work, at the plants which are in Texas and Massachusetts, will start in late 2014, Alstom said in an announcement on Thursday.

The work Alstom will carry out is a long-term service contract to give GDF’s power plant fleet new flexibility. The plants together use fourteen Alstom GT24 gas turbines and generate enough electricity to power more than three million homes in the two states.
