Egypt considers 1950 MW coal power plant

The Egyptian Ministry of Electricity is examining the possibility of constructing a 1950 MW coal fired power plant at Safaga on the Red Sea.

Electricity and energy minister Mahmoud Balbaa had reviewed alternatives to secure fuel needed to operate power stations so as to meet demand for energy.

Earlier, the ministry said that it has completed the preparation of Request For Proposals (RFP) and related other specifications to build the country’s first nuclear power project.

Implementation of the nuclear project is likely to begin this year, and the power plant is expected to come on line by 2020, according to Energy Business Review.
