New Delhi was braced to continue to be hit by blackouts today as a week-long shortage of coal continued.

The city had to cope with 1 GW less of its usual power yesterday but, being a Sunday, this affected fewer businesses that it would on a weekday.

But the crisis was predicted to peak today as most people in the city returned to work.

Heavy rain has stalled the mining and loading of coal in the region, with some power plants cutting down on generation by almost half.

Government officials told India Today that the situation would “normalise” in 24-48 hours, but power bosses are said to not be expecting a return to normal operations until the end of the week.
