The Morupule plant once provided up to 80 per cent of Botswana’s electricity supply, but it was taken offline in 2013 when it was replaced by the newer Morupule B.
However Morupule B is now struggling to keep pace with the country’s surging power energy demand, resulting in a new lease of life for the original plant.
Doosan has secured the full modernisation contract for the 132 MW plant from Botswana national energy company BPC.
Doosan Heavy Industries of Korea is the EPC contractor while Czech Republic-based Doosan à… koda Power has been awarded the contract to supply turbine sets with an output of 38 MW.
The scope of work includes the general overhaul of the existing three 33 MW steam turbines as well as delivery of the turbine and generator from Doosan à… koda Power.
The Pilsen-based company will fit the new equipment on the plant’s original foundations, replacing a fourth unit that was previously damaged.
Doosan à… koda Power said this is a “technically demanding and custom-made solution” and was preceded by several weeks’ laser scanning of the plant machine hall.
Stà„›pàƒ¡n Svoboda, sales manager for Doosan à… koda Power, added that the company utilized expertise in the field of steam turbine retrofit and modernization which it gained from similar projects in Finland, France, Bangladesh and Mexico.
The first turbine will go into operation at the sub-Saharan power plant in 2017.
