27 November 2002 – For the second year in a row, Alstom-supplied boilers have earned top ranking among coal-fired units as 19 of America’s 20 lowest emitters of nitrogen oxide (NOx), according to the latest U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) data on power plant NOx emissions. The new EPA data cover power plants in the Acid Rain programme for the year 2001.

All 19 Alstom units are tangentially fired boilers retrofitted with low NOx firing systems that burn Powder River Basin (PRB) coals. The EPA findings, Alstom said, demonstrate that tangentially fired units equipped with its low NOx firing systems and burning PRB coals can achieve industry-leading NOx emissions.

“These numbers are conclusive,” says Dave O’Neill, Alstom’s general manager of Performance Projects, Windsor (CT) operations. “We’ve proven that if a tangentially fired boiler is burning PRB coal, our systems can produce record-low NOx emissions.”
“We’ve retrofitted all 19 of the lowest NOx emission pulverised coal boilers in the country,” O’Neill added. “And those are the kinds of environmental solutions and cost savings that are so critical to coal-fired power producers trying to meet increasingly stringent emission regulations while offering competitive power rates to their customers.”

Reducing NOx emissions helps improve air quality. Developed specifically for tangentially fired boilers, Alstom’s LNCFSTM and TFS 2000RTM low NOx systems have consistently achieved the industry’s lowest NOx emissions, particularly when burning PRB coals.

Six of the top 10 (and fourteen of the top 20) units identified by the EPA involve boilers owned and operated by the St. Louis-based Fortune 500 corporation, Ameren, parent of two utility companies. NOx emissions range from 0.11 to 0.15 lb/MM BTU, with performance related to unit specific factors. The top nineteen pulverized coal boilers on EPA’s list, shown in the table below, are burning PRB coal and using Alstom low NOx burners – a winning combination for emissions control.

The other unit in the EPA’s top 20 list for 2001 uses integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) technology.
