Agreement reached on Sampur coal plant

Sri Lankaࢀ™s Ministry of Power and Energy and Indiaࢀ™s high commissioner in Colombo, Ashok Kantha, have announced that negotiations have been completed and agreement has been reached between India and Sri Lanka regarding construction of a coal power plant at Sampur in the Trincomalee district of Eastern Province of Sri Lanka, and the formal agreement would be signed in September. The agreements will be signed by the secretaries of Sri Lanka and India Ministries of Power and Energy.

National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) of India will begin construction of the 500 MW plant in 2012, and the plant is scheduled to be connected to the national grid in 2017. The joint venture between NTPC and the Ceylon Electricity Board will cost $500m.
