Tokyo Electric Power (Tepco) is to build a $1.91bn, 1000 MW coal-fired power plant at the site of Tepco’s Yokosuka thermal power facility in Japan.
Tepco is joining forces with coal power specialist Electric Power Development (J-Power) to develop the plant, according to the Energy Collective website.
The new facility will likely use integrated coal gasification combined cycle (IGCC) technology, which generates electricity twice through a gas turbine and a steam turbine and is about 20 per cent more energy-efficient than conventional coal-based methods.
Tepco hopes the high efficiency of the plant will help lower high fuel costs, when it becomes operational in 2020.
