Europe’s transmission system operators took steps this week to boost their defences against cyberattacks.
The Brussels-based European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity (ENTSO-E) announced today that it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the European Network for Cyber Security (ENCS), based in The Netherlands.
The two bodies said they will collaborate on developing state-of-the-art cybersecurity regulation, practices and standards for Europe’s power transmission system.
Under the agreement, ENCS will provide ENTSO-E with technical information and support on cybersecurity issues, while ENTSO-E will bring insights into the European transmission system and the challenges faced by its operators.
ENTSO-E said the collaboration will provide “increased resilience and valuable wider conversations” and will help Europe’s power systems meet “the ever-mounting cyber security challenge”.
“As a membership organization, our strength is in the huge collective experience and knowledge spread across our member base,” said Anjos Nijk, ENCS managing director. “That’s what we bring to bear on solving Europe’s smart grid cybersecurity challenges. By collaborating with ENTSO-E, we gain visibility and insight from a wider and deeper pool of experts, and they can begin to benefit from the expertise we’ve developed.”
Laurent Schmitt, ENTSO-E secretary general, added: “The energy landscape is in a period of rapid transition. One of the biggest changes is the ever-mounting cybersecurity challenge.
“We’re delighted to work with ENCS, as well as with the European Union Agency for Network and Information Security (ENISA), to help our members increase their resilience while bringing their own very valuable contribution to the wider security conversation.”
