Three staff injured at UK nuclear power plant

Three workers were injured at a nuclear power plant in the UK last night following what has been described as an “accidental steam release”.

The employees at Heysham 1 power station were taken to hospital, with one said to be suffering from burns, another a broken hip and the third a broken back.

The plant is operated by EDF and the company was quick to state that the incident was not related to the nuclear process.

EDF said in a statement: “It goes without saying that everyone’s thoughts are with our three colleagues who have been injured. We will be doing everything we can to support them and their families while they recover.

“There was no risk to the public during the incident which is now under control. A full investigation into the cause will be carried out. Safety is our overriding priority and we will investigate how this happened and make sure all measures necessary are put in place to ensure it doesn’t happen again.”
