GE has launched a new battery energy storage platform that it says is designed to support both grid integration of renewable power sources and decentralized generation.

The company’s Reservoir platform is a modular energy storage solution for AC or DC coupled systems, based on a 1.2 MW/4 MWh unit.

It integrates GE’s ‘Battery Blade’ module stack design with technologies from across the company’s portfolio and features the proprietary Blade Protection Unit, which GE says can extend battery life by up to 15 per cent and reduce fault currents by a factor of five.

In addition, the firm said the modular design can reduce construction costs by up to 50 per cent.

The platform uses GE’s Predix and Edge control technologies and already has a 20 MW/80 MWh pre-launch commitment, GE said.

Eric Gebhardt, GE Power’s vice-president and strategic technology officer, said the storage platform “enables cost-effective distribution, storage and utilization of cleaner, more reliable power where and when it is needed most.

“It can fit into most any setting, from centralized grid systems to the most remote villages and communities. The Reservoir also allows energy providers new degrees of flexibility for more intelligently managing and getting the most out of all their power assets.”
