Lower cost monitoring system for biogas engines

An independent trial has proved that Gas Data’s new BOS biogas monitoring system can produce cost savings of 39% on engine oil consumption and downtime, says the company. The technology almost doubles the lifetime of oil used in engines that generate renewable energy at biogas plants, landfill sites and sewage treatment works, without causing any detrimental effect on engines or components.

Instead of conventional apparatus that relies on scrubbing 100% of incoming gas, BOS treats just the vital 5% of gas that enters the crankcase – doing so for less than one tenth the capital and running cost of a comprehensive system, says Gas Data. BOS senses and remotely monitors hydrogen sulphide – the presence of which can significantly degrade oils, creates shorter maintenance intervals and increased operating costs. By first sensing and remotely monitoring incoming gas, then automatically adapting its dosing to match, BOS eliminates the waste of consumables.

The trial involved a Deutz 620B 16 cylinder 1250 kW machine, with its engine running on gas containing typically 28,000 mg/Nm3 H2S; far greater than the manufacturer’s limit of 3,000 mg/Nm3 at 100% methane levels.
