MAN B&W low-speed genset engine is the power behind Greek power plant expansion
The Public Power Corporation of Greece (PPC) has placed an order for another MAN B&W 9K60MC-S engine with MAN Diesel’s Korean licensee, Doosan Engine.
The two-stroke, low-speed engine develops 14.8 MW at 142.9 rpm, at a single-cycle site efficiency of 52 per cent, and is intended for the PPC power plant on the island of Chios where an identical engine has been running since January 2008.
Man B&W said that the new engine is planned to enter service by May 2009. The Chios genset is set to bring the total amount of stationary MAN B&W K60MC-S power installed to 350 MW, distributed among seven power plants.
Chios is the fifth largest of the Greek islands, situated in the Aegean Sea seven km off the Turkish coast. The island of Chios is noted for its strong merchant shipping community.
PPC is the biggest electrical power company in Greece and produces and supplies electricity to the entire country.
It was founded by the Greek government in 1950 to develop a national energy policy and provide cheap electricity through the exploitation of domestic products and resources.
JCB genset delivers a Mitie solution
Leading engineering services firm, Mitie Engineering South East has specified a JCB G330Q 330 kVA generator to provide stand-by power for the life safety systems at a new office development in central London, UK.
Mitie Engineering South East selected the JCB G330Q model for its client Hermes to deliver emergency power to critical systems such as fire alarms, lighting and lifts as part of an eight-storey office development at Finsbury Circus.
Chosen for its compact dimensions, powerful output and sound attenuation, the JCB G330Q generator was craned into position on the roof of the base-build site. The model specified features lift-off doors on both sides, 3-phase sensing, a fire valve kit and an auxiliary control panel with alarms signalling low fuel and battery charger failure.
Mitie’s senior electrical engineer, Dave Rees-Jones said: “This emergency stand by power application demanded a 330 kVA, low height, compact unit with good acoustic properties and competitive pricing. That is exactly what JCB Power Products and Greenshields JCB delivered. No-one else could match the JCB G330Q’s combination of size and noise yet still meet the required duty.”
Taking on board industry requirements, JCB has developed a range of 44 models, covering 18 power nodes from 15 kVA to 500 kVA. The range is split into three types: 18 open generators, 18 canopy generators and eight rental models. All power nodes are available at 50Hz or 60Hz.

Caterpillar introduces natgas genset for island mode operation
Caterpillar has announced the introduction of two G3520C natural gas generator sets available with optional air and fuel system controls that have been enhanced to provide superior island mode operational capability.
Designed for commercial and institutional customers that require exceptionally reliable, high-quality electric power, the island mode control system option for the G3520C gas generator sets, offered in 60 Hz and 50 Hz versions, allows customers to generate power independently from the power grid with a high-efficiency, natural gas fueled engine.
“Distributed generation is widely recognized as one effective way to use energy more efficiently, but in many applications which can only withstand limited deviations in frequency and voltage during loading, unloading and load fluctuation, the transient response capability and the steady state stability become critical,” said Rob Schueffner, marketing manager in Caterpillar’s Electric Power Division.
“The introduction of the G3520C gas generator set with the island mode feature fills a critical need while contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by creating more opportunities for gas generator sets in distributed generation applications.”
The Cat natural gas generator sets with the island mode feature tackle the major barriers for distributed generation in stand-alone applications where a utility grid connection is unavailable or the utility grid is not stable.
The improved transient capability also supports the use of low-emission gas generator sets in stand-by power applications, providing customers with more clean energy options for their electric power supply solutions.
Driven by an electronically controlled, lean-burn gaseous fueled reciprocating Cat engine, the G3520C generator set was designed to offer a high power density and excellent fuel efficiency while managing to maintain NOx emissions within vigorous limits.
Caterpillar’s new natural gas genset provides the flexibility to operate on pipeline natural gas with a wide range of Caterpillar Methane Numbers (MN) and delivers an industry-leading ISO electrical efficiency of up to 38.4 per cent at 60 Hz and up to 40.4 per cent at 50 Hz even with the use of two engine-driven water pumps.
The Cat G3520C generator set operates at 60 Hz/1800 rpm with a continuous rating of 2055 ekW, or at 50 Hz/1500 rpm with a continuous rating of 1966 ekW.
It has a standard NOx emissions rating of 1g/bhp-h at 60 Hz and 500 mg/Nm3 at 50 Hz, with performance of 0.5g/bhp-h at 60 Hz and 250 mg/Nm3 at 50 Hz available through a 54 °C separate circuit aftercooler (SCAC) system that can be used with a conventional cooling system arrangement in almost all geographic locations.
The G3520C is built on a heavy-duty, diesel-based, bottom-end platform for superior durability with a unique top-end design for gas application optimization.
The new genset also features an open combustion chamber design capable of operating at pressures as low as 1.5 psi (10.3 kPa).
Standard on the G3520C generator set is a digital microprocessor gas engine control module, which automatically and precisely regulates ignition, engine governing and air-to-fuel ratio for optimum fuel economy.
Its patent pending, technologically-advanced air-to-fuel ratio control monitors charge air density and maintains stringent NOx control under a variety of ambient and load conditions.
The G3520C generator set features an individual-cylinder detonation sensing and timing control, with a prechamber-type spark plug design for extended service life without adjustment.
The Cat G3520C generator set is easily tailored to specific applications with a wide selection of Cat SR4B generators and generator set attachments, including oversized generators.
Additional features include exhaust options, circuit breakers, alarm and remote annunciator modules, and battery chargers.
Deutz unveils latest range of air-cooled diesel gensets
Diesel and gas engine manufacturer Deutz has introduced a new range of air-cooled diesel gensets (ADG).
The German firm says that the powerful yet compact generating sets are available in three, four and six cylinder versions and are ideal for the provision of a back-up emergency power supply, or for use in applications where no permanent power supply is available.
Powered by the Deutz 91 Series (912 and 914) diesel engines, with outputs from 28 kVA to 152 kVA (at cos phi 0.8), they cover mains power frequencies of 50 Hz and 60Hz.
Deutz says that the innovative, compact, modular design takes up far less space and are much lighter than other similar gensets, which the German company said that together with minimum maintenance and low operating costs make them exceptional value for money.
The ADG 28C and ADG 32C models are powered by the DEUTZ F3L 912 three cylinder diesel engine, whilst the ADG 42C and ADG 62C versions are equipped with the F4L 914 and BF4L 914 four cylinder engines, respectively The ADG 72C and ADG 102C gensets are powered by the DEUTZ F6L 914 and BF6L 914 six cylinder engines; with the ADG 132C and ADG 152C models powered by a six cylinder BF6L 914C diesel engine.
In conjunction with the Marelli alternators, optimized for use with the “virtually indestructible” and “legendary” Deutz air-cooled engines, these gensets set new standards in quality, performance reliability and efficiency, says the German company.
They are available with a sound-insulated external housing, or in an open frame version. While having an “exceptionally compact” design, four generously sized doors and a folding operating panel provide optimum accessibility for any periodic servicing and maintenance work.
Typically the ADG 42C model has the following dimensions 1980 mm long, 1110 mm wide and 1610 mm high, with a weight of 1300 kg.
Features include an advanced injection and combustion system, with full electronic control, plus an optional electronic governor.
Incorporating guided cooling air ducting, the ADG range is designed to operate effectively at high or low ambient temperatures, with excellent sound insulation delivering ultra-quiet operation.
There are a number of customized control modules also available that can provide a comprehensive choice of monitoring functions and digital displays to suit different operating conditions.
