Micro-CHP can deliver significant carbon savings if used in the right applications – UK trial results

For small businesses, the trial has demonstrated that micro-CHP systems can cut overall site carbon dioxide emissions by 15–20% when installed as the lead boiler in appropriate applications, such as care homes, community housing schemes and leisure centres. These types of installations can also considerably reduce heating bills due to the reduced demand for grid electricity.

Finland’s Wärtsilä Corporation has been awarded a contract by Less & Timber of the Czech Republic to supply a biomass-fuelled CHP plant for the company’s sawmill in Caslav, around 100 km east of Prague.

The new plant will burn residue in the form of bark and wood chips from the sawmill and have a net electrical power output of 4.3 MW and a thermal output of up to 10 MW. The electricity will be sold to the national grid and the heat will be used for drying in the sawmill. The electrical output in condensing operation will be 5.5 MW.

Wärtsilä will deliver a complete BioPower 5CEX plant under an equipment procurement contract. It is due to be handed over in October 2009.
