Seventh heaven for Volvo Penta engine

Volvo Penta is to introduce a new industrial engine for power generation with a class-leading 250 kVA prime 50 Hz and 227 kW standby 60 Hz and dual speed switching between 50 Hz and 60 Hz as standard.

The TAD734GE, an entirely new seven-litre diesel engine, offers high output, a rapid response to step loading, and low operational costs, the company says.

The in-line six-cylinder engine has electronically controlled common-rail fuel injection in combination with a waste-gated turbocharger, air to air charge air cooling and four valves per cylinder. Precise control over the fuel injection process through a system based on CAN-bus technology allows performance characteristics to be optimized to give very fast response to step loading, but with low fuel consumption and low overall exhaust emissions, Volvo Penta adds

The same EMS 2 electronic engine management system is fitted to Volvo Penta’s nine-, 12- and 16-litre engines the TAD734GE is developed and certified for EU Stage 2, also meeting the standards for TA-luft.

Caterpillar tool has the measure of gensets

Genset manufacturer Caterpillar Inc has launched an advanced software tool that accurately specifies and sizes generator set requirements for any power needs – from large or small, gas or diesel, standby or prime.

Caterpillar’s Electric Power SpecSizer considers factors such as site conditions, load characteristics and required performance to provide accurate and timely technical data, robust load models and optimized algorithms to assist in the selection of a competitively sized generator set that best suits power needs.

Several new features set SpecSizer apart as a revolutionary tool in generator set sizing, claims Caterpillar, including its ability to evaluate load types such as air conditioners, elevators, ultraviolet lights, single-phase NEMA and single-phase IEC motors. SpecSizer offers an ‘Application Wizard’, which collects data on the user’s loads, then organizes them into steps, considering voltage dip and load demands, to assist in selecting the most competitive generator set size in terms of both rating and footprint.

The new sizing tool employs an Internet-based auto-update capability to synchronize the programme’s generator set data with the most current technical data for Caterpillar Electric Power products, including new generator set product information.

SpecSizer provides a multi-lingual user interface that can be toggled between seven languages – Chinese Mandarin, English, French, German, Italian, Spanish and Russian to size your generator set and create your Project Sizing and Load Reports. Caterpillar provides support 24 hours a day, seven days a week, for SpecSizer software and technical inquiries.

Fuel cell gensets find allies

Fuel cell developer Ceres Power has forged an alliance with UK electricity distribution company EDF Energy Networks to design and build domestic scale genset units using fuel cell technology.

Initial prototype products based a fuel cell-battery hybrid will be available for evaluation during 2008 and 2009, says Ceres, with EDF funding 50 per cent of the first phase of the project to the tune of £600 000 ($1.2m) through UK energy regulator Ofgem’s Innovation Funding Incentive.

The appliances will provide back-up power, particularly in homes that suffer from regular outages, with Ceres commenting that the initial users are expected to be vulnerable customers for whom the security of a dependable home power supply in the event of grid interruption is extremely important. There are over 100 000 such customers on EDF Energy Networks’ register for priority services.

Paul Cuttill, chief operating officer of EDF Energy Networks said that the Ceres technology offers an excellent way of “working towards a sustainable future”.
