EC ‘ignores cogeneration’ in Strategic Energy Review

While the Energy review highlights renewables, unbundling in the electricity supply sector and carbon dioxide sequestration, references to cogeneration, which meets all the Commission’s aims of speed, energy saving, carbon dioxide reduction and energy security are minimal, says the Association.

Few analytical tools exist that capture the collective local and remote emissions benefits of a CHP system, at least in the US, according to a new report: ‘Survey of Emissions Models for Distributed CHP Systems’, published by the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE). And: ‘the absence of a comprehensive tool to estimate displaced emissions penalizes CHP by not allowing the full appreciation of its environmental benefits’, said Neal Elliott, co-author and ACEEE Industry Program Director.
