Canada’s first solar-powered bus shelter, outside the Etobicoke Civic Centre in Toronto, is the first of 350 i-SHELTER units being installed throughout the city by Carmanah Technologies Inc. Carmanah’s solar-powered technology offers several advantages over conventional hard-wired, grid-powered lighting, says the company. The LED-based systems require 90% less energy than incandescent bulbs and can operate for up to 100,000 hours before replacement. The system offers uninterrupted performance, even during major power outages. Installation is simple and low-cost. It involves no digging or trenching, no electrical permits and no traffic disruption. Once installed, the lights draw all their energy from the sun and require minimal maintenance.
