Connecticut Aims At 100% Clean Energy

US State of Connecticut Governor John G. Rowland has signed an executive order calling on the state government to purchase 20% of its total electricity from clean, renewable energy sources by 2010. In addition, Rowland said the state would purchase half of its electricity from renewable energy by 2020, and all of its energy from renewable sources by 2050.

‘The quickest path to cleaner air and reducing America’s dependence on foreign oil is to increase demand for non-polluting electric power made from cleaner, renewable sources such as wind, solar, and fuel cell power,’ Rowland said.

The state’s plan is expected to remove at least 190,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere by 2020, according to Rowland’s office. The order will impact state buildings, colleges and universities.
