Kyrgyzstan plans energy privatization

Askar Akayev, president of Kyrgyzstan, has ordered plans for privatizing the country`s promising energy sector, to be presented by April 1.

A recent presidential decree said corporate management was being imposed on the state energy company, Kyrgyzenergoholding, as a first step and a board of directors was established. The board will have to work out the privatization strategy. Kudaikul Abasbekov, vice president of Kyrgyzstan, has been appointed Kyrgyzenergoholding`s acting chief executive.

Five hydroelectric power stations on the Toktogul Cascade of the Naryn River were exempted from the impending privatization.
