John Wood secures $875m EPC contract for 800 MW Israel CCGT

British energy services firm John Wood Group has secured an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract valued at about $875m from Dorad Energy to build an 800 MW gas fired power plant in Israel.

John Wood said the plant is due online within 36 months and will represent around 8 per cent of Israel’s total installed capacity. Wood Group GTS has turnkey responsibility for the combined-cycle plant, with 12 gas turbines, a heat-recovery steam generator, and two steam turbines.

Turkey’s Zorlu Enerji has completed financing of the Dorad plant, in which it holds a 25 per cent stake. Zorlu has secured approximately $1bn from Bank Hapoalim and Clal Finance Business Credit-led group of banks, said Reuters.

The project is worth $1.2bn, 80 per cent from loans to be paid back over 17 years after planned completion in 2013, at an interest rate of 5.1–5.5 per cent.

International Power to build 1300 MW coal fired power plant in Morocco

Morocco’s state power utility ONE has awarded a 1300 MW coal fired power plant deal to a consortium led by International Power.

The UK firm, in partnership with Moroccan energy company Nareva, beat a consortium linking French electricity group EDF and China’s Datang International Power to win the contract to build the station at Safi, a city on the country’s Atlantic coast, 370km south of Rabat.

The plant is expected to go on stream by the end of 2012 and to produce 10 TWh, or 27 per cent of Morocco’s electricity consumption, when it reaches its full output capacity in 2014, said ONE.

Nigeria’s 500 MW Omotosho Phase 2 power plant to install four GE gas turbines

Nigeria will add four GE gas turbines to the Omotosho Phase 2 power plant, in Ondo State in the southwest of the West African nation.

GE will provide four Frame 9E gas turbines, generators, accessories, technical assistance and training to the EPC contractor, China Machinery & Equipment Company (CMEC).

Shipment of the turbines is planned for mid-2011. The plant’s primary fuel will be natural gas although the 9E accommodates a wide range of fuels.

Owned and operated by the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN), the new plant should add over 500 MW to Nigeria’s grid from 2013.

The Nigerian government aims to add 35 GW of new generation capacity over the next ten years.

Syria awards $950m 724 MW plant contract to Metka/Ansaldo joint venture

A Greek/Italian joint venture has won a build, own and operate contract for a 724 MW combined-cycle natural gas fired plant.

Greece’s Metka and Italy’s Ansaldo Energia will build the thermal power plant on an EPC basis in the Deir Azzour region in northeast Syria.

Metka holds 76.5 per cent of the joint venture and Ansaldo Energia 23.5 per cent. Ansaldo Energia will supply the plant with two AE94.3 A4 gas turbines, as well as the relevant generators and auxiliary systems, and one RT30 steam turbine with associated generator and auxiliary systems.

Commercial operation is due to begin within 40 months from the opening of a letter of credit, according to Metka.

E.ON commissions 400 MW CCGT power plant in Russia

Germany’s largest utility E.ON has commissioned a 400 MW combined-cycle gas turbine (CCGT) power plant at Shatura, about 150km east of Moscow.

E.ON said the new power plant was recently recognized by the UN as the first Russian Joint Implementation project under the Kyoto mechanism.

“With an efficiency of about 56 per cent, E.ON is setting new standards here in terms of efficiency and climate compatibility of power production,” said Bernhard Reutersberg, member of the E.ON Board of Management.

E.ON has three additional new-build projects under way in Russia as part of an investment programme totalling €2.3bn ($3bn).

Egypt, World Bank agree $820m loan for gas, wind plants

Egypt and the World Bank have signed two loan agreements worth a total of $820m to finance the building of a gas fired power plant and a wind farm – a 1500 MW combined-cycle gas turbine plant in North Giza, near Cairo, worth $600m, and a wind power project worth $220m.

Egypt has some of the world’s best wind power resources, particularly in the Gulf of Suez, where at least 7200 MW could be developed by 2022, said the World Bank.

Egypt: Bids have been invited for building a 1.5 GW combined-cycle gas fired power plant at Giza North near Cairo. The $1.4bn plant’s main fuel will be natural gas, with light diesel oil as a back-up. Construction is scheduled to complete by 2014 - see main story.

Kazakhstan: $1bn has been allocated to building the country’s first nuclear power station by 2020. Toshiba and Marubeni have signed a memorandum of understanding on estimating the cost and preparing a feasibility report.

Namibia: Gazprom and Tullow Oil have been invited to build a 800 MW gas fired power plant to exploit the Kudu field, and are working on development plans with Itochu and Namcor, the state-owned oil company. The plant would likely cost about $700m, while about $500m would be needed for related infrastructure.

Nigeria: The Edo State government has signed a memorandum of understanding with Azura Power (West Africa) Limited to build a 450 MW independent power plant (IPP). The IPP will be close to Benin City, according to an Edo State announcement. Azura is a partnership between investment firm Amaya Capital Partners and the energy group Aldwych International.

Oman: Tenders are set to launch for consultants to advise on planning an 80–100 MW gas fired power plant project on the Musandam peninsula. The plant could include a desalination component and would complement a planned gas conditioning project.

Saudi Arabia: Saudi Electricity Company (SEC) has signed a SR1.43bn ($380m) contract to expand the power plant at Qassim by 472 MW.

South Africa: ABB has won a $43m order from Eskom to supply medium-voltage switchgear, protection and SCADA equipment for the new Kusile 4800 MW coal fired power plant being built in Mpumalanga.

Sudan: China Gezhouba Group’s subsidiary CGGC International has won a $711m contract to build a hydropower station. Construction is due to take 1751 days and the contract specifies that the station’s owner will complete local resettlement.

Zambia: Planned capacity of the $1.5bn Kafue Gorge Lower Project hydro plant has been raised to 700-800 MW, up from 600 MW, after a survey by the Chinese contractor. A joint venture of state utility Zesco with the China Africa Development Fund and Sino-Hydro is set to start construction by June 2011 for completion by 2016.
