Mitsubishi buys Pratt & Whitney Power Systems

Japan's Mitsubishi Heavy Industries has completed its acquisition of gas turbine maker Pratt & Whitney Power Systems.

Pratt & Whitney Power Systems is the small and medium-size gas turbine business unit of US aeroengine manufacturer Pratt & Whitney.

As part of the deal, MHI has also bought PWPS affiliate Turboden of Italy, a manufacturer of organic Rankine cycle turbines.

PWPS makes and services aero-derivative gas turbines and has around 430 staff. It has delivered more than 1700 aero-derivative turbines worldwide and its main product has been the 30 MW class machine, although the company is developing a 60 MW class model.

MHI has traditionally focused its gas turbine business on large-capacity, high-efficiency systems, but the acquisition of PWPS has allowed it to expand its power generation portfolio with small and medium-size aero-derivative engines.
