Mexico is set to see a major increase in its wind power generation capacity, rising from 569 MW to approximately 2000 MW by the end of this year, reports Agence France Presse, citing local industry sources.

"By 2014 the generation will be over 2500 MW," said Leopoldo Rodríguez, president of the Mexican Association of Wind Energy (AMDEE).

The increase is in sharp contrast to previous investment.

In 2008, the country only generated 2 MW from wind sources but a change in legislation has provided incentives for the sector.

Investment in Mexico’s wind power sector currently stands at $2bn, according to Rodríguez.
