Porto do Pecem I coal fired power plant has obtained the green light from the Brazilian energy sector watchdog Aneel to commence test operations of its first unit.

The commencement of the commercial operation of the 360 MW unit will be cleared only after completion of the tests, the watchdog confirmed.

Porto do Pecem I, which will have a capacity of 720 MW, is situated in Sao Goncalo do Amarante, in the northeastern Ceara state.

Brazilian energy company MPX Energia SA and power holding company EDP Energias no Brasil each hold a 50 per cent stake in the plant.
