Planners at a Scottish council have recommended that proposals for a controversial new power station are not given the go-ahead.

Ayrshire Power wants to build a coal fired, carbon capture and storage (CCS) facility at Hunterston, near an existing nuclear plant.

Already the plans have met with huge opposition - a public consultation that ended last month received 20,000 objections.

Now North Ayrshire Council has recommended that plans for the plant are rejected. Although the final decision lies not with the local council but with Scottish government ministers, council rejection means a public enquiry is almost certain.

Ayrshire Power is owned by Peel Energy, which is behind several renewable energy projects across the north of the UK.
