The University of Maryland Eastern Shore has formed a renewable energy development company.

Eastern Shore Energy will focus on developing systems capable of generating 100-150 MW from wind, solar and biomass projects at multiple sites on the lower eastern shore of Maryland.

The initiative is the result of a partnership between the Maryland Hawk Corporation, a non-profit affiliate of the university, and National Renewable Solutions, which is part of National Wind.

Ronald Forsythe, the university’s vice president of technology and commercialization, said the launch of the company represented “the culmination of UMES’s recent efforts to promote the development of renewable energy production within our region”.

The Eastern Shore Energy is studying the feasibility of three wind projects in Somerset and Worcester counties and expects to identify other sites over the coming months.
