Plans to reopen the Somerset coal- and oil-fired power plant in Massachusetts have been scrapped. The plant was closed in 2010 after state officials said the plant had to switch to a cleaner burning fuel source.

NRG Energy, the plant’s owner, received approval in 2008 to use plasma gasification, which produces electricity with a mix of coal and wood chips. Legal challenges led to the suspension of the plan and state regulators agreed to allow NRG to withdraw its permit applications.

NRG said the company faced state limits on wood-burning power plants and other adverse market conditions.
